As a child growing up in the suburbs of Detroit, going out to get a genuine Coney Island hot dog was one of the things I looked forward to the most when it came to food. Coney dogs are incredibly yummy. Some people say that Chicago and New York style hot dogs are the absolute best in the world, but I have to disagree with them. Most likely, they've never had the pleasure of eating a Detroit-style coney dog, which is a real shame.
There are some restaurants around the U.S. that claim to offer coney dogs, and some of them are quite good, but honestly, there's nothing quite like the real thing, which seems to be a purely regional thing in Michigan. Thankfully however, there are some companies who sell genuine coney sauce that you can purchase in some stores and over the internet, so anyone who wants to try one can try to make one themselves.
How To Make Your Own Coney Island Hot Dog:
All you really need are some hot dog buns (I like mine to be slightly toasted), hot dogs (I recommend Hebrew National All-Beef Franks), and if you want, some diced yellow onions and yellow mustard to top it with. Oh yeah, and coney sauce, of course - If you can't find it in stores near you, here is the only Coney Island-style chili on Amazon, by Chili Man, which is a very good brand:
And here is some Coney-Island style Mustard to go along with it:
